Difficulties of Translating English TV Breaking News related to Covid-19 into Arabic
Abstract
Since the outbreak of (covid-19) in 2020, the whole world faced unprecedented crisis of information and the people could not get accurate, reliable and timely information to understand and protect themselves.As a bridge of communication,translation plays a significant role in getting valuable, reliable and updated covid-19information and knowledge.A lot of TV news channels covered the pandemic that concerned a lot of people around the world. This paper tackles the difficulties of translating English breaking news of covid-19 into Arabic.It investigates the strategies used in translating these news. Twenty breaking news from CNN and BBC channels are selected.A qualitative-linguistic analysis is conducted to find out how American breaking news is different from the British ones and how to render them into Arabic. It is found that certain linguistic features are used like abbreviations,simple present tense,punctuation marks(a comma or a semicolon). Besides,the study shows that such strategies including literal, transposition and cultural equivalence are used
