Brief Bios Muayad Jajo is a university professor of English.  He teaches Ph.D. students of English as well as other postgraduate and undergraduate students.  In addition to teaching English and American Literature, Comparative Literature, Literary Theory and Criticism, IELTS, TOEFL, TOEIC, ESL, EPC and ESP, he is a Japanologist, course designer, educator, teacher trainer, composer, encyclopedist, guitarist, vocalist, acoustician, music theorist, poet, painter, graphic and 3D designer, visual FX expert, researcher, stage performer, C# programmer, NLP and mind control tactician.  Currently he is the chairman of the Department of English at Komar University of Science and Technology, member of the Academic Promotion Committee at Komar and the president of Japan Friendship Association. Over the last three decades, he taught over 20,000 university students, gave over 100 different courses at various universities, institutes and language centers, translated textbooks, supervised postgraduate students, wrote and performed music and designed over 35 courses.

 

Zareena Younis is a senior English Instructor in the Center of Intensive English Program at Komar University of Science and Technology (KUST).  She is teaching pre-academic students and had also taught Academic English Writing II.  Zareena was previously a paralegal and advocate for human rights in the UK.  She assisted a human rights organization (cage prisoners) on two research papers to do with the war on terror and ghost renditions.  Her interests include charity work, exploring different cultures, and travelling.

Workshop Description This workshop outlines the core principles of effective academic writing in English.  It is divided into two parts.  The first part begins by introducing the audience to the importance, uses and applications of academic English and then draws attention to some misconceptions about its use.  It then explains with illustrations each principle.  The second part of the workshop engages the audience members into a problem-solving activity in which they are required to convert a non-academic passage into an academic one by applying the principles explained.

Members of the audience receive a passage written in non-Academic English and are asked to convert it to academic English by applying the principles elaborated above.
